A week in the life of ....

Running a small business on your own is much more difficult than I first imagined!  There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes and lots of admin too! In addition to running Denbies Candles I also work part-time. So, in the run up to Christmas, which is my busiest time of the year, and with a young daughter to look after, it’s frantic to say the least!

I drop my daughter off at pre-school before heading into the office for the morning.  Last week, I had a last-minute wholesale candle order to be included in corporate Christmas hampers. As soon as I get home, it’s straight into candle making and during the evening I’m packing orders. My husband has kindly offered (well, been persuaded) to help!

Candle Making

It’s another full day in the office today, I did manage to schedule my social media posts for the week during my lunch hour and on the drive home I ran through my to-do list. During the evening I finished off the candles - wick trimming, labelling, allocate batch numbers. I also began to start making reed diffusers to make sure I have enough stock for my forthcoming craft fairs.

It’s another full day in the office so after picking my daughter up and the bedtime routine, I don’t start “work” until 7.30pm. I continued packing orders and labelling new products as well as doing a stock take just to make sure the quantities on my website match the stock available.

I delivered candles and reed diffusers to two of my local stockists and then went back into the kitchen to make 200 individual wax melts for another wholesale order.  I quickly gathered all my stock together, loaded the car (via picking my daughter up from pre-school and taking her swimming) and headed to a local school for a late-night Christmas shopping event.

After spending the morning packing orders and a quick trip to the post office we spent some quality family time together. I do find it hard to switch off when it is so busy, but we enjoyed a trip into Huddersfield for a relaxing few drinks in a Christmas tipi before having something to eat. This is what Christmas is truly about.

 Christmas Drinks

The weather was miserable today, so my little girl spent the day playing and watching Disney Films (literally on a constant loop). In between keeping her entertained I packed orders, ordered supplies; put away all the supply deliveries I received during the week and got ready for tomorrow. All the boxes are packed and by the door ready to load for the next morning.

I was delighted to be able to secure a stall at a very well regarded outdoor Christmas Market in Huddersfield. The atmosphere and footfall were fantastic, and the event finished off a great but long week.

Christmas Fair

Now to get ready to do it all again tomorrow!
